Lake Placid’s Olympic Speed Skating Oval was originally built for the 1932 Olympic Games. For those games, it also served as the site of the opening and closing ceremonies. During the 1980 Olympics, US speed skater Eric Heiden won all 5 races here, netting 5 gold medals, and one world record, making him the most successful Winter Olympian at one Winter Olympics.
Weather permitting, the rink typically offers outdoor skating everyday from 1-3 pm, 4-6 pm and 7-9 pm ($8 for adults and $5 for kids), along with hockey and figure skate rentals for just $3. Call 518.523.1655 for the latest schedule or click here.
Head to the rink at night for a unique experience skating under the stars (or snowflakes) and stay warm with a cup of hot cocoa.
